Day of relics w/coinnut

George and I did our usual friday hike into the woods in search of history , it was a windy cold day and we even endured some unexpected snow flurries :shocked04:verreaction: .

no coins for me today but i did get an assortment of relics , about 9 buttons , a cool iron strap hinge , some spoon parts both iron and pewter, a couple of musket round-ball , an iron heel plate.

I was sure it was a complete pocket watch but i was wrong

the needle compartment was completely dry but i added some water and freed the needle and it works pretty well :happydance01:

but this was a nice surprise , i recovered one of these very early on this year . its an artillerist's plume holder from and early 1800's to 1825 military shako helmet.

Nice looking war relics Dan. The other pieces have to be there somewhere :hairpulling: It was a good day, but you can feel the cold in the air. Winter is almost here. I hate to say it, but I may have to start cleaning some of my stuff lol I had a great day detecting today. Found lots of relics, Rosette, 3 ringer, 2 ringer, a couple of musket balls, part of a silver spoon, a buckle of some sorts that says Sterling, big cloak button and 2 Civil War buttons (1 General Service, 1 Artillery). No coins today, but that is ok. The Artillery button only showed a spec of gold color before cleaning. I was hoping for a little bit of color. It did not want to let go of the dirt, but after about 5 minutes of continuous cleaning, I was stunned by what I saw. It is probably my best CW button to date. I'm also trying to crop my photos, so I'm not sure what they will look like lol

He charged me 40 bucks. lol Here is a different view of it. I just can't get the right angle to show the true in hand look. Other than the 3 small green corrosion spots (I believe they can be scraped off), the button has no flaws...all gold. This shot shows a bit more of the surface color. All the black marks are just shadows. I can't believe it actually had that amount of gold left on it. Could it be an officer's button? Maybe more gilt to them?

Steve these holders were fo early helmets similar to these type

I also found the letters USCE on the back of the compass , these were made by Taylor and the style was popular from about the late 1880's to about the 1930's mine was made and used by the United States Civil Engineers around WWI era
