I obtained permission to hunt an old church grounds a few days ago so I spent about 3 hours checking it out. The first thing the Pastor said after saying yes was good luck a friend of mine already hunted it and did not find much. He also stated that the ground had been manipulated a lot over the years during various remodeling projects. But I knew there had to be at least a couple keepers. After about 30 minutes and very few signals I thought he might have been right. Then I got a solid 12-44 at 6 inches and I thought maybe a worn silver dime. When I pulled it out of the hole the first thing I thought was nickel and there must be a silver coin in the hole with it. After a little cleaning I realized I had a civil War card token, only my second in 37 years of detecting. You can imagine that got the blood pumping. It was pretty slow for the next 1.5 hours I only had 1 wheat and a few clad coins. I then hit a deep wheat signal with several more to follow in a 10x10 area, still no silver. I then decided to move to a different area of the grounds near some older trees and within a couple minutes was digging deep wheats then the first Indian with more wheats and 4 more Indians, again this was all in a small area. I got another solid 12-44 at 7 inches and to my surprise another Civil war token. In total I had 15 wheats, 5 Indians (1900, 01, 02, 05, 07) and two CW tokens. One token is dated 1863 from CW Smiths Dry goods in East Troy WI. The other token is also dated 1863 from City Brewery & Malt House in Milwaukee, WI. As a side note I was running the CTX. 3030 with the 17 coil.

Hello Jeff,
Not that you would sell those awesome tokens, but doing a little looking online, both of those are $100+ tokens in non-dug condition. They are really cool!!

Thanks for doing some research Darren. It is tempting but I love looking at and sharing my finds with friends and family, especially the unique ones.

I just noticed all the IH's are around the turn of the century and the tokens are 1863, that is surprising! What year was the church built?

Love those old Civil War tokens!!!! I like to dig for those CW tokens! I myself found a 1863 CW token last May. Only one CW token in my two years of metal detecting. thumbsup01
