Insane weekend! 24 silver coins from one site!

I'm still pinching myself!

On Saturday morning, I headed out early to do some detecting at a couple of schools that I found silver at earlier this year. On my way to the first school I passed a large park in a small town that I had noticed in the past but had written off because I didn't think the park looked old. All of the trees are small, in fact many are recently planted saplings. But I decided to drive around the park for the heck of it, and this time I noticed an old school bell mounted on a pedestal that indicated this park was the site of an old school that was built in 1904. So I decided that I would give it a try for an hour or so and move on if I didn't find anything.

By the end of my hunt I had found 9 silver coins including 4 silver quarters! :shocked04:

I had to head home early because I had to get ready for a Halloween party, but I knew that I would be returning on Sunday (today) to hit this park hard.

This morning I arrived at the park just as the sun was coming up. It was only 26 degrees and there was frost on the ground, but it ended up being a beautiful day with temps near 60 and sunny. Today I found 15 silver coins including a Walking Liberty Half! I also found a sterling silver Boy Scouts ring.

I still can't believe that I found a virgin site in this day and age. I don't think that's it's totally virgin as there was very little clad or surface coins, but whoever hunted it didn't seem to get any of the coins that were 5 deep or deeper. In fact, I talked to 2 different people in the park who told me that they had seen someone else detecting there recently. Obviously he didn't have an E-Trac!

Here are my total finds for both Saturday and Sunday:

The sterling silver Boy Scouts ring is smooshed but hopefully I can get it straightened out:

I found 67 wheat cents. (Yes, I got weary of digging them!)

One lone Indian Head and one lone Buffalo Nickel:

Some of the older dimes. The 1916 Merc does not have a mint mark:

I was happy to get an SLQ even if it's a smoothie. It was about 10 deep:

The Walker was 11 deep. I am mystified how a 1941 Walker got so deep. Before cleaning and after:

Oddly enough, all of the coins in this park seem to have been dropped in the 1940s. Tons of wheat cents but almost no Indian Heads. Lots of Mercs but almost no Barbers.

Man, talk about a fun weekend of detecting! I still can't believe it!

Thanks for looking and happy hunting! :beerbuddy:

Awesome Tony! I am very happy for you. It's the kind of site we all dream about. Next time I come up I'll bring my ring mandrel and rubber hammer and show you how to fix all your bent rings. Again, congrats on an awesome hunt! Best wishes and HH, Dave.

This is just obscene Tony. My eyeballs actually hurt from bugging too far out of my head after looking at this post. I must confess I was hoping to keep pace with you silver wise this year but you just went ahead and made a mess of that for me! lol

Congrats on a sweet weekend. I think we'd all kill to find a site like that. Makes me want to rethink every site I ever dismissed as not looking good.

I dug that same boy scout ring earlier this year. It's one of my favorite finds.

Congrats!

congrats on your find all the silver and others too but the best find may very well be the park they dont come along often dennis :perfect10: :perfect10:

:omg: :omg: :omg: :omg: :omg:

Tony, you're raising the bar too far up for the rest of us. That is definitely the site we are all dreaming about  and you were lucky enough to be the one to find it. :congrats:

I'm just  looking at all the pretty silver.

:wow: Awesome bunch of finds! It is hard to believe that sites like this still exist, but they are out there, glad you found one and made the most of it, congrats!

|) |) Great hunt Tony! Just goes to show that those little parks can produce too! Great job!

Thanks! It's actually a fairly large park. I've only covered a fraction of it. I think I will be making many return trips there. thumbsup01

You and your etrac are a formidable combination. :shocked03: I hope you are wearing knee pads. Great hunt Tony :clapping: :clapping: :clapping:

Heaven :daydream: :daydream: :daydream: lol What a find Tony :shocked04: When you are done with it, try digging the iffy targets at great depth....I bet the Barbers and Indians are just out of reach of the disc.

Tony, a virgin site....oh my. You said you are going back and I hope you do just as good or better. Coinnut is onto something, dig those iffy's.

:wow: :congrats: on a great weekend

You know how I said that most of the coins at this site seem to have been dropped in the 1940s? Well, I finally got around to cleaning and sorting the wheat cents, and out of 67 coins only ONE of them was from the 1950s! That's just weird!

It's a 1953-D. Why wouldn't there be more wheat cents from the 1950s? Unless previous detectorists found most of the wheaties that weren't as deep? :dontknow:

In fact that lone 1953 wheatie was the ONLY coin I found from the 1950s. ALL of the other coins were from the 1940s or older. (Other than a few modern clad coins.)
