Full Metal Digger

Hey Diggers,
I haven't detected much over the summer but now that fall is coming I expect to make up for lost time. I drove up to a nearby small town to check out their old park. Unfortunately it had a lot of fill dirt (mostly clays) and I only found one wheatie at 10 inches deep. The ground was so hard it was like chipping concrete to get to the coin. Across the street from the park was an old looking corner. Looked like an old house stood there once and now it is just an empty corner. I thought I'd try my luck there and almost immediately got a funky penny signal at 4 inches. What a surprise to pop out an 1893 Barber quarter! It is mostly black from being in a fire though. Maybe the old house burned down? Still, it is my oldest Barber quarter ever.

After trying for about 30 more minutes at that corner and not getting any good signals I decided to drive around and see if there were any other good spots in the town. As I was driving in an old residential area I noticed my GPS showed a school street a few blocks away. I drove over and found a 1970s school that is all shuttered up and not in use anymore. There was a large grassy area out front that had been recently mowed and that's when I saw an old school bell mounted on a stand by the :usaflag: pole. The plaque said Site of original school 1915.
My first signal was a 1948 Rosie! I could tell this place had been metal detected before because all I could find were coins deeper than 8 inches (plus a high ratio of modern nickels). My next good signal was a 1916 mercury dime at 10 inches deep. Note: You can stare at the back of a 1916 Mercury dime all day long but a D mintmark will NOT grow there! I know because I tried. Later, I got a super sweet chirp at 8 inches deep and it was hitting from all directions 12-46, 10-47, etc. Dug down and got a 1953 Rosie! A 4 silver day!
Thanks for looking and HH, Dave.
