1600's era silver !!

Today Drew an I hit a site he recommended (don't worry Dave no coppers for me )and within the first hour i had a nice knee buckle and from the looks of it it might have been silver plated.

after that it slowed down some only nabbing a couple of buttons and a silver 47 roosie dime. :dontknow:

With 1 find today i scratched off a couple of things off my bucket list
which was to find a complete 1600's shoe buckle :happy:
and a complete solid silver shoe buckle :bananadance:

its a very small shoe buckle , they generally were a lot smaller in the 1600's but this one could very well be a child's

even the cross pin is silver Dave :shocked03: and Drew and I were both shocked that the chape and tongue moved very freely right after it was dug which is amazing after more than 320 years in the ground

and the rest of the finds , the buttons were plain tombacs and a couple of smaller plain brass ones , part of a pewter spoon and a musket ball

On a side note Dan, I finally got a chance to scout out an area that I was almost positive should have a cellar hole. After work I went to see if I could find it and my instincts were correct. It looks like a very old site and the best thing is that it is not on any of the maps. No dig holes or iron scraps leaning against trees or lying on top of rocks :happy: I did not bring in my gear because I went straight from work. I think I will save it for a special day and maybe keep it for myself :thinkingabout: Although Dave would probably blow up my car up if I did not invite him :eyebrow:

Drew , there is a questionable area that might have some initials but its pretty worn on that area of the buckle (underneath the frame ) . I'll have to study it close .once the foliage dies down it will open a lot more area to swing you better go back Drew. :yes:

Todd , everything is silver even the cross pin (which is crazy :crazy: ) . 1720's an older shoe buckles have only 1 prong on the chape and a single tine tongue. this is heavy for its size . They generally get smaller the older they go back as well.

thanks Jeff you know how rare just silver plated ones are and whole silver ones can be extremely scarce but add to the fact its an early one at that .

after more than 12 years heres the only other 1690's to 1720 shoe buckles i have found (with the new addition pictured) as you can see they are much more bigger than this one . the one on the left is broken in half and the right is an iron one .

also i added a picture of the largest shoe buckle (just frame) and the smallest . just to show you how much bigger they progressed in size until about 1800.

finally just the silver plated and other solid silver ones i have recovered in those amount of years. as you can see they don't come around to often .
