It has been at least a couple of months since I had the opportunity to get out in the woods and really swing the coil. I slept poorly last night and I swear it was because I was excited like a little kid, knowing I was heading for the woods bright and early. I will sleep good tonight :sleepy:.

Hiked through the thick and wet woods to get to a cellar hole I had hit before with good success. There is so much iron at that site that I figured if I went slow enough I could sniff out a goody or two. I hit the Draped Bust first. Didn't know what I had until i got it home and cleaned it. Obverse is toasted but it gave up a date (1802).

I dug a couple of buttons before I sniffed out the Fugio. I was digging just about anything that hinted it might have been something besides iron. No mistaking what I had found.

Dug a few more buttons. Couple of them pewter and one tombac. Towards the back of the site, a tree had blown over revealing an old colonial era shell midden. The two pewter buttons came from the midden.

The reverse of the Fugio cleaned up nice. The obverse cleaned up well enough to give the date (1787).

Mosquitos were bad but DEET kept them at bay. Deer flies were a nuisance. I swallowed at least two spiders. Also found the remains of an old divider compass.

Stay safe!

Nice couple of coppers. Sorry about the spiders lol hmmmm... tasty :shocked01: Glad you got a date of of the Draped Bust. The Fugio is always a 1787, but it's still nice to be able read the date anyways. Worth the trip and the critters that came with it.

:congrats: on the Fugio and the Draped Bust coppers. I know that I don't hunt the woods but every time I read these posts about those type of coins it makes me want to give it a try.

Deer flies are always a nuisance, they just won't go away.

The bugs are down in my area. I didn't even use spray the last few days. :dontknow:
That is a crazy pile of shells too. Good luck on return trips.

Thanks folks!

I looked them up. Those spiders I ate were Spined Micrathena spiders. Ugly....but tasty ;)

Dan, I will try and get some better pics for an attempted ID on the Fugio.
