View Full Version : Indian Head in the Woods
It was only in the low 30's today with strong winds and on and off snow. However both the Mrs and the boy were out this evening so I had no obligations and thus decided to tough it out. I headed to a wooded spot where I hoped the wind wouldn't be too bad. I fought the cold and brambles and mud for about 2 hours and came away with one nice keeper - an 1865 Indian Head. It caught me by surprise as it only rang up at 12-30 on the Etrac. Other than that I found two wheats, three Lincolns, and a few relics. Any thoughts on the larger buckle or the other bell shaped object would be great. The round item is interesting because I'm pretty sure it is mica in the center and not glass or plastic. I'm guessing it's an old eye piece to something.
Happy hunting!

Great looking IH. I am gonna guess that the bell shaped item is a oxknob only because of the little hole in it.

Not just any old Indian Head, but a really nice 1865! |:cheering:
I have found that some of the older bronze Indian Heads will ring up as low as 12-30 on the E-Trac. I distinctly remember finding an 1875 IH one time that was a consistent 12-30. I have also found some later date Indian Heads that rang up at 12-41, so they can vary widely.
Congrats on finding that 1865 out in the woods! :clapping:

 WoW ! a 1865 IH ! I haven't seen one of those yet . I have a 1863 but have never seen a 1865. There was a great coinage shortage because of the War and a lot of Tokens and Stamp coinage was circulating back then besides the occasional 2 Cent Piece and IH which was hoarded more than spent.
Once again, Congrats !
