Well, my pal Hockeyguy and I went to a big park upstate today, and spent several hours up there hunting. I managed to get two good finds which is a relief after a few weeks drought, the rest of the finds were clad, pull tabs, oh and screw on tops, and did I mention pull tabs, and bottle caps.. and finished up the day finding more pull tabs

seriously, my first goody looks like it belongs as a military button, but it came out of the ground flat like a coin..

The second by a huge old tree was a copper, certainly a large cent but I'm hoping for a colonial coin.. the mineral oil will let us know soon.. Hopefully, there will be something under that dirt. The copper was only 3.5 inches deep but was under some roots, and obviously someone else tried to dig it as all the big roots were already cut and they apparantly gave up.. they were off center by just a couple inches.. so they did all the real hard work and I got the pay off.

Beautiful finds!! What happened to the button, do you think, to make it flat?

Can't wait to see what that copper might be. Hope you will post a photo after cleaning. A colonial coin would be great to see. I want to find one, but probably never will :)

Cool finds. I think somebody may be regretting not spending a bit more time digging that copper. :)

Let the copper soak overnight in Mineral Oil and cleaned it this morning. Man, this coin has been through the wringer. I managed to make out part of the Obv. looks to me to be either a coronet or braided Large cent. The date is gone, and on the Rev. only a small portion of the wreath exists. OH well, its a LC, certainly not one of the prettiest, but I'll take it.

Wow... its condition makes you wonder how old it is.
I'd take it too.

Dang, I wonder if someone took a hammer to it. That is one rough coin. Still a cool find though.

That is one beat up coin, but I'd take it and add it to the other treasures.

I can make out some of the image details. It took a beating, but it's still a sweet find for sure.

It's a liberty head that dates from 1816-1857... without seeing the bottom of the hair it's tough to date it... Nice find!
