first time poster here. sharing my most recent coin find. for a lack of somewhere to detect,i went to an area that we had been hunting hard over the years. an old homesite had given up some nice finds over the years,so i went there to spend some time hunting. i did not go around the foundations, focusing instead on an area about 50 yards away. the very first item i dug was a plain silver ring. i slowed down my pace, but for the next hour or so no keepers. finally a nice high tone and a solid 88 reading on the mxt after 2 shovefuls of dirt,i saw the edge of silver in the plug. by the size,i assumed 1/2 dollar but it turned out to be something more....a 1729 :huh:thinkingabout:. next and last coin dug that day was an 1877ss Quarter. after i got home and did some research,i found out the coin was a french 1/2 ECU.not a lot of value, but stands as my 2nd oldest coin to date
additional info: while researching info on this coin,i came across this statement which may explain how this coin got to the U.S.
In 1781,the French navy brought 12 cartloads of silver coins to Yorktown,Va.for payment to American troops. This forestalled a mutiny and secured the victory that saved the revolution

Big silver from 1729? All I can say is WOW! What an incredible find! Such a wonderful piece of colonial history!

The 1877 seated quarter is a great find too! I would love to see some better photos of it as well after it's cleaned up some.

Congrats on the terrific finds! |)

it is a mintmark...the E is the Tours Mint. from what i can find, there were many mints in France. probably 20 or more, based on the amount of mintmarks on their coinage from this era.
