View Full Version : Cow Paths have been kind to me.

Earlier this month I was detecting a pasture site and started down a cow path. My first and only good signal for the day was an 1868 Shield nickle. Today, I went back and hit a different section of the pasture. Again I started down a cow path and my first signal was an 1858 half dime in very nice shape except for a hole through lady Liberty's head. About 15 feet away i dug an eagle coat button. That is the 5th half dime and 6th eagle from this site although the other halfs and eagles came from different fields.
The weird thing is, there was no civil war action here other than the Andersonville prison which is about 35 miles away. And, I am finding Union buttons when my hunting buddies have found Confederate buttons. Oh well, I'll keep it. My CS button is out there somewhere.

There was a small settlement here at one time. The button dates from 1840-50.

Sounds like a great spot. Cow paths make us slow down and thoroughly hunt one area. Would be a great place to grid off and hunt slow. Congratulations, thanks for sharing.

Congrats! I live in an area with lots of Rev War action and No Civil War action but I have found many more civil war buttons.

Nicew button and 1/2 dime. I've gotten 10 seated and not one of them has a hole, I feel cheated.

Congrats!
Like Tennessee said, that pasture sounds like a good place to set up, and grid off! Who knows what else is out there waiting for you! :->

Thanks for the replies Y'all. This site has been hunted since the 70s. But, as y'all can see it is never hunted out. The problem with the pasture is the thick matted grass that keeps the coil at least 6s above ground. That is why I was hunting the cow path, because it is worn to the dirt and I can get some depth.
This field has produced confederate buttons and at least one gold coin so i will keep on hunting it. If the farmer ever plows it i will be sick from work for at least a week!
