Been out several times this week for an hour or two before heading to work, :grin: at an park that was donated to the town I work at, back in 1887. Earlier this week we found an merc dime and a Civil War Button :clapping: . Yesterday morning I found my first Half Dime. :peace: A 1852 beautity, except for the dang hole in it \:[ Looked like it was made using a nail or some thing. Any ways, the oldest U.S. coin I have found so far. Good hunting all. thumbsup01

What great condition!!!!! (other then the hole) No drills back in the day and all nails were square, it adds history but still is a &quot:grin:ang hole. Great find.

:perfect10:! What a beauty! Looks like it was dropped the same year it was minted. Bummer about the hole >:/! I found a half dime once. But it was only a clad dime cut in two lol! WTG!! HH!

:wow:. Hey, thanks every one for the nice comments. Your right starman2, it really does look like it was dropped right after it was minted. Found this on a steep hill side over looking a ball field. Yea, I was bummed out at first about the hole, but listen to a lot of your comments, it really does give this coin more history and character.
Thanks again all, and good hunting to every one. thumbsup01. Eric

Beautiful coin despite the hole, it is what it is holed or not a fabulous find. Three out of the last 4 good old coins I have found have been holed, 1837 Large Cent, 1:eyebrow:8 Indian (hole right through date) and a 1866 Two Cent piece but I am happy to have them.

She's a beauty..... And the hole adds some character. My oldest coin find is a 1730 king George II and just like yours, it has a hole hammered in the center

i find quite a few coins with holes as well , and almost all are in better shape or have more detail than most that don't have the hole. 1852 was very important or a special year for someone to have to make a keepsake like that .

Thanks Thiltzy, it is one beautiful looking coin :smitten: A 1730, now that's getting back there thumbsup01
Hey Dan, you would think if they were going to hang these coins as a keepsake, they stick that hole top-center ::huh:: But from what I've seen on the forum, those coins are alot better shape. They weren't stuck in some ones pocket for several years or handed off to few hundred folks in circulation.
Good hunting guys, thumbsup01

WOW, that's an incredible coin! :smitten:

It looks fresh out of the mint! I don't mind unobstrusive holes too much, they add a connection of the coin to an actual human. Really makes you wonder who the person was and why they made the hole in the coin.

Terrific find! :perfect10:

Congrats on finding your oldest U.S. coin :grin:
At least you can make out the date...My oldest U.S. coins is a caped bust dime with a hole in it....right through the date!!! >:# >{
But like it's been said. It kinda gives you a connection with a person from the past. :beerbuddy:
