Awesome hunt with more Shield Niks!

I went back to the park where I found the 1870 Shield Nickel last Monday and had a great 4 hour hunt!

Found a very nice 1909 Barber dime and two more Shield nickels! Both are 1868. I have only found 4 of these prior to last week and now they are popping up. I think when I go back I will start going after any deep signal because it is obvious that the area was used in the 1860's or so until present so who knows what other goodies are hiding there.

I also found a pinfire cartridge. I think that these are 1850's or so?

    Thanks for looking!

Great finds, and they all look to be in pretty good condition! I've yet to find a shield, but certainly on the wish list. As for digging dep signals, that's how I have to work the parks in my area. In most city parks, typically anything less than maybe 4 inches will be modern trash or zincolns mostly. Once I get a signal at 6" or more, it'll likely be something good. Don't know the reason, but it seems many of the old parks had maybe 4 or so inches of fill put on them somewhere around the 1940s.

Two more beautiful Shield Nickels with very clear dates! Highly unusual.

The pinfire cartidge is a great find also! I think you're right, they were mainly used in the 1850s and 1860s.

Congrats on the great recoveries. I've only found 1 shield and it is not as clean as those 2. The Barber dime is in fantastic shape. Thx for posting. WD
